LOCATION: Adams, Nebraska
OFFENSE: Theft by Deception
CASE #: 2021-5050
A resident of Adams, Nebraska states he was contacted online about a possible problem with his computer. Through a series of deceptions and chicanery, the suspect gained control of the victim’s computer and changed a charge of $544.00 to $54,400.00. The suspect, who spoke with a Middle Eastern accent, told the victim to inform his bank it was for a personal purchase and the money would be refunded.
Later that same day a male with a Middle Eastern accent called the victim’s bank and attempted to convince the bank he was the account holder, however he failed to properly answer the security question and the bank did not process his request. The original transaction however had already sent the money to an overseas account.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use abundant caution when making financial transactions or dealing with unknown persons online, on the telephone, through the mail, or in person. Do not provide any personal, financial, or confidential information to unknown persons as the suspects are charlatans and knaves who will not return funds. Most times the money is moved to one or several accounts outside of the United States and the money is impossible to retrieve.
Remain calm, do not submit to demands for urgency, secrecy, or threats of arrest or financial difficulties. No government agency will accept payment via gift card and that is not a normal business transaction for a reputable business. Contact a family member, trusted friend, or a financial advisor such as a banker or accountant for assistance, or call Southeast Communications (402-223-4080) and report the incident to your local police department or an investigator at the Gage County Sheriff’s Office at 402-223-5222.
