OFFENSE: Phone Scam
CASE #: 2021-0168
A resident of Beatrice received a phone call on January 13th with a suspect claiming to be his son and he had been involved in an accident. When the resident questioned why he sounded different, the suspect stated he had hit his lip, which affected his speech. The suspect asked the victim to “not tell mom”.
The resident was almost immediately aware this was a scam and did not provide any personal, confidential, or financial information and did not send the suspect any money.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to be wary of scams, whether by phone, e-mail, in person, or via mail. Warning signs include demands for secrecy, the situation requires immediate payment, or payment is to be made by non-traditional means, such as sending large amounts of cash or payment by using gift cards, or threats of arrest for failure to comply.
If you are contacted by a suspect and think you are being scammed, do not make any payments or give any personal, financial, or confidential to them. Break contact with the suspects and seek the advice of a family member, trusted friend, or financial advisor such as a banker or accountant. You can also contact the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
