CASE #: 2024-4967
On September 27, 2024 the Gage County Sheriff’s Office received information of a possible scam which had occurred in Pickrell, Nebraska. The investigating deputy met with the victim and it was learned that this individual was manipulated into withdrawing cash to release a lock on their computer system. Cash was withdrawn from the victims bank account which was then sent to an unknown subject via Bit-Coin.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office is asking that all persons remain vigilant to solicitations by anyone via the internet. Most often these requests are tied to a scam resulting in theft of identity or cash.
Do not provide any type of payment over the Internet or phone unless you know the person you are dealing with and it is a regular, conventional business transaction. The suspects often try to keep you on the phone and / or threaten you and try to convince you to keep the matter a secret. This is a clear sign that the other person is not operating with good intentions.
Before you send any money or give out any information, contact a family member, a trusted friend, a financial advisor (such as your bank or accountant, or call Southeast Communications (402-223-4080) and ask to speak with a deputy or an officer.
