OFFENSE: Phone Scam
CASE #: 2025-0923
DETAILS: A resident of Beatrice received a phone call on the afternoon of Thursday 03/06/2025 from a male who claimed he was aa Gage County deputy. He told her that her husband had a judgment against him from the courts and had court due tomorrow. Before he could proceed further, she began to question him, then she called her husband who went to the courthouse, but found there was no court judgment against him, so he came to the sheriff's office.
An investigator who spoke with the husband in the lobby of the sheriff's office and then spoke to the victim's wife on his cell phone. She described the suspect's voice and accent and it did not match anyone at the sheriff's office. The suspect had "spoofed" a phone number to appear on the victim's phone and although the phone number that showed up was a government number, he had not called from that number.
Due to the wife's vigilance and guarded responses, they did not lose any money or provide any personal, confidential, or financial information to the suspect.
