On Wednesday, 03-19-2025, at approximately 1:08 pm, 19-year-old Teri Burns of Essex, Iowa had parked her 2014 Chevrolet Malibu on the shoulder of northbound Highway 77 about a half mile west of Southwest 2nd Road (3 miles south of Cortland) during a heavy snowstorm with blizzard like conditions.
While she was parked there, an unknown semi-truck was driving northbound on Highway 77 and struck the left rear area of her vehicle, causing significant damage and forcing her car into the ditch.
Ms. Burns went to Beatrice Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Her passenger was also sitting in the vehicle, but did not go to the hospital for any injuries.
The sheriff’s office will continue to investigate the hit and run accident. Anyone with information on the accident can call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office at 402-223-5222 and ask to speak with a deputy or an investigator and provide the information by phone.
