DETAILS:  The Gage County Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation into the failure of 79-year-old James L. Hicks, a registered sex offender, of rural Cortland to verify his information on the Nebraska Sex Offender Registry during February 2025 as required by law.  

An investigator from the Sheriff's office determined there was probable cause to arrest James Hicks, contacted him, and arranged for him to surrender to a deputy at the Sheriff's Office.  Hicks was taken into custody at the Sheriff's Office in Beatrice and booked into the jail.

For Verification of information on the sex offender registry, a person has an entire month to report to the Sheriff's Office and complete the paperwork, which takes as little as 5 minutes to complete and there is no fee or financial charge associated with the verification process.
