Animal Abuse & False Reporting-Cortland

DATE & TIME: 05/25/2024 @ 1915 hours

LOCATION: 440 W 7th St.  Cortland, NE 68331

OFFENSE: Animal Abuse and False Reporting

CASE #: 2024-2614

DETAILS:

On 05/25/2024, at approximately 1915 hours, the Gage County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to 725 Washington Ave. in Cortland, NE for a reported animal shooting.  Upon the deputy's arrival to this residence, the dog which was later identified as Hulk, an 8-year-old Heeler Mix, had passed away on this resident's back patio area where they were having a gathering.  The deputy observed what appeared to be a pellet gun entry wound on the left side of the dog.

Through the investigation in speaking with witnesses, the suspect, and the owner of the dog, it was revealed that Roy W. Schroeder, 57-year-old, from Cortland, NE had shot the dog with a pellet gun after the dog was running through his garage and yard.   Schroeder initially gave false statements to the deputy who was working the case, but ultimately confessed to shooting the pellet gun twice, once at Hulk and once at another dog that belonged to the same owner.

Roy Schroeder was arrested and released with a criminal citation for False Reporting and Animal Abuse.
