Theft by Deception

DATE & TIME: 11-21-2021 @ 4:50 pm

LOCATION: Rural Cortland, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Theft by Deception

CASE #: 2021-4901

A resident of rural Cortland, Nebraska called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report he had been contacted by suspects via e-mail and phone regarding a mail package. Through a combination or trickery, deceit, and pressure by both phone and e-mail, the victim sent $1,200.00 to the suspects via payment “apps” to avoid being arrested by the Crete Police Department, according to the suspects. At no time did the victim commit any crime, however he was duped into making the payments to avoid an “investigation”.

At one point the victim reported talking to the suspect on the phone. He reports the suspect had a Spanish accent.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution when making financial transactions with anyone over the Internet. Strong “Red flags” or warnings that the person is attempting to defraud you are demands for immediate payment, payment through non-traditional methods (such as gift cards or via “apps”), threats and demands for secrecy.

If you receive this type of pressure or are concerned, contact Southeast Communications and talk to your local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office at 402-223-5222 and ask to speak with an investigator.
