A resident of Cortland, Nebraska notified the Gage County Sheriff’s Office that she had received a phone call around 11:30 am and when she answered, a recorded/automated message stated the suspect was an “Investigator with the Social Security Office” and fraud had been detected and it was associated with her social security number. The recording advised her to press “one”, but she hung up instead. She told the Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator she did not lose any money, but just wanted to make the public aware this type of scam/fraud is being perpetuated.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to always be wary of potential fraud and scam, whether it is from a phone call, online, through the mail, or in person. Do not provide any personal, financial, or confidential information to unknown persons. Often associated with scams and fraud, the suspect may demand some type of payment, request secrecy, or claim some type of urgency.
