OFFENSE: Traffic Accident
CASE #: 2017-4773
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to an accident on Southwest 18th Road, approximately a half mile south of Highway 8.
The deputy investigating the accident determined a Semi-Tractor, owned by Werner Construction out of Hastings, Nebraska was hauling a load of asphalt from Southwest 18th Road and West Walnut Road north on Southwest 18th Road to the highway construction on Highway 112. A 2013 GMC pickup, being driven by 52-year-old Bradley Schramm of Bremen Kansas was northbound on Southwest 18th Road, driving behind the semi. Schramm’s pickup struck the rear of the semi-trailer, causing major front end damage to the pick-up and causing the vehicle’s airbags to deploy. Damage to the pick-up truck is estimated to be over $6,500.00. The damage to the rear area of the semi-trailer is estimated to be $50.00.
Southeast Communications was alerted to the accident by On-Star, due to the vehicle’s airbags deploying. The Odell Volunteer Fire Department dispatched paramedics and firefighters to the scene, however it was determined the driver suffered only minor injuries and declined to be transported. The semi-truck driver, 64-year-old Timothy E. Griebel of Fremont, Nebraska did not realize the rear of his vehicle had been struck until he was notified by a fellow employee who was following several hundred feet behind Schramm.
Schramm stated he was following in the dust cloud behind the semi, which was traveling at about 30 miles per hour. Schramm stated he did not see the vehicle due to the dust cloud until he had struck the rear of the vehicle.
Both drivers were wearing occupant protection devices. Alcohol use is not suspected in this accident.
