Facebook Account Criminal Impersonation (Identity Theft)

A Clatonia area resident called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office to report identity theft by an unknown person who had hacked her Facebook account. She states the suspect changed the authentication information for the account, so Facebook was not very cooperative in assisting her regarding getting her old account shut down.

The victim states the suspect used her account information to solicit money and make comments in her name that she did not make on a local Facebook group. At one point, she was contacted by an unknown person regarding restoring her account and she made a payment that was purportedly to rectify the situation, but it did not.

While the investigator was talking to the victim on the phone, it appears the fraudulent Facebook account/profile was finally taken down by Facebook.
