A resident of rural Adams, Nebraska called an investigator with the Gage County Sheriff’ Office to report that around noon, a white male, average build and average height, about 30 years of age, had come up to her house stating he was with DISH TV. He then talked to her and said he needed to come inside the house. After appearing to work some repairs or tests inside the home, he told her he would need her credit card number for the work. She stated she usually pays through the bank and he told her no, that would not work, he needed her credit card information.
She called the bank and after hanging up with bank officials, she told him again everything would be deducted electronically. He then confessed that he was not from DISH TV, gathered up his belongings and left the house in white sedan.
The investigator confirmed with the caller she had not lost any money or property and urged her to contact her bank and to exercise caution when leaving her house unattended.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution when dealing with anyone who arrives at their residence or business unannounced or not on a regular route, such as mailmen or meter readers. Residents should never give out personal, financial, or confidential information to anyone who they do not know or if the business transaction does not conform to ordinary business practices. Immediately call the sheriff’s office or local police department to report the activity.
