A resident of Filley, Nebraska reported his personal computer had been hacked when he called a “800” number that had appeared as an electronic banner on his computer warning of the danger of a virus.  Once the victim had called the suspect, the computer hacker, through verbal and electronic legerdemain, convinced the victim to gain access to parts of his computer. Eventually, the suspect wanted to get paid $299.99 for his work, however the victim became suspicious when the suspect, who claimed to work for “Dream Team Business Solutions, LLC” out of Sugarland, Texas, refused to give his credit card information to him.

The victim contacted a relative, who called the sheriff’s office. A deputy confirmed the victim had not lost any money, then turned the case over to an investigator at the Gage County Sheriff’s Office for follow-up. The investigator worked with the victim and the relative who had reported the incident to ensure the victim did not lose any money or to mitigate further damage to his credit. The investigator suggested the victim contact his bank and have their fraud prevention specialists assist him and to protect his accounts. They were also advised to notify any other financial institution where they may have accounts.

The danger of fraud is prevalent on any online transaction. Compounding this is the speed with which suspects can drain accounts or diminish other assets, so the Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use extreme caution when making transactions on the Internet.

If you believe you are being scammed, stop all communication with the suspect, lock your accounts, contact your bank and call the local police department or call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with an investigator.
