Sweepstakes Scam

DATE & TIME: 02-23-2023 / 11:11 am

LOCATION: Beatrice, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Sweepstakes Scam

CASE #: 2023-0883

A resident of Beatrice was contacted by a suspect who stated he worked for the federal government and was contacting the victim to help him receive some money from a sweepstakes award.  The victim was given a claim number and bogus phone numbers to call for the San Francisco Credit Union.  He was told he had won, but they would need an upfront payment in order for him to collect the sweepstakes award.

The victim advised a sheriff’s office investigator he did not make any payments or provide any personal, confidential or financial information to the suspect.  Case information for this incident was forwarded to the Beatrice Police Department for their records.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind people that scams and frauds come in a variety of methods and means.  Whether by phone call, e-mail, US mail, or personal contact, be wary of situations that appear to good to be true, if any request for money or threats of arrest are made.

If you have a situation like this, break off contact with the suspects and speak with a family member, friend, or trusted professional such as a clergy member or financial professional at the bank.  Further assistance can be obtained by contacting local law enforcement or the Gage County Sheriff’s Office at 402-223-5222 or 402-223-4080 (Southeast Communications).
