OFFENSE: Violation of the Sex Offender Registration Act (3 Counts)
CASE #: 2017-1465
A registered sex offender, Cledale Caldwell, 45 of Wymore, Nebraska was arrested at the Gage County Sheriff’s Office on 05-01-2017 on three counts of violation of the Nebraska Sex Offender Registration Act.
A few weeks earlier, a Gage County Sheriff’s Office investigator was notified by a trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol that he had observed a registered sex offender, 45-year-old Cledale Caldwell, of Wymore, Nebraska driving a vehicle which was licensed to him but Caldwell had not reported the vehicle and license plate to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office for Sex Offender Registration as required by law.
The Gage County investigator checked several online and paper records at the Sheriff’s Office, as well as information from the Gage County Treasurer’s Office, and discovered Caldwell had a second vehicle licensed to him that he did not register with the Gage County Sheriff’s Office as required under the Nebraska Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA).
Additionally, Caldwell was required to verify his sex offender registration information with the Gage County Sheriff’s Office at any time during the month of April, but failed to do so.
On Monday, 05-01-2017, the investigator, who was conducting follow-up in Wymore on an unrelated case, was notified that Caldwell was in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office. The investigator contacted a uniformed deputy from the sheriff’s Office who took Caldwell into custody at the Sheriff’s Office and transported him to the Gage County Detention Center.
Persons assigned to the Nebraska Sex Offender Registry are required to report, in person, to the Sheriff’s Office of the county of their residence information such as residence, telephone numbers, employment, vehicle type and license plates, as well as other information. Changes to this information are also to be reported to the Sheriff’s Office in a timely manner. Persons classified as Lifetime Offenders, such as Caldwell, are required to verify, in person, at the Sheriff’s Office of their county of residence quarterly each year, with the initial reporting based off their birth month and subsequent verifications every three months thereafter. The registered sex offender has the entire month to verify his information, which takes approximately 15 minutes, at the Gage County Sheriff’s Office.
