Possible Scam Phone Call

A resident of rural Ellis, Nebraska received several phone calls from a “Restricted” number with the person calling advising her they were going to be coming to her house and for her to call a phone number and refer to a case number. In the message, they caller correctly identified her home address. 

She, instead, came to the sheriff’s office and spoke with an investigator who reviewed the information she provided, called the phone number she had been instructed to call and, without identifying the victim, spoke with a representative from the company who immediately identified the case number as not being legitimate.  It is believed the original caller wanted to panic the resident into providing some type of “immediate payment”, usually an electronic transfer of funds or a gift card of some type.

The resident was advised to not make any payments under duress and to contact the sheriff’s office if any suspicious incidents occur.
