LOCATION: Beatrice, NE
OFFENSE: Phone Scam
CASE #: 2024-3252
DETAILS:
A resident of Beatrice called the Gage County Sheriff's Office to report that he had received a phone call from someone claiming to be his son and used the son's actual name. When the victim said the suspect did not sound like his son, the suspect said that was because he had been involved in an automobile accident and had a broken nose. The suspect then said he was taken down to the "police department" because there were a couple of old beer bottles in the car. The suspect told the victim he was giving the phone to the police officer so he could give him the name of his attorney.
The victim spoke with the ersatz "police officer" who gave him the number of an attorney to call. Luckily, however the victim had the presence of mind to actually call his son and ask if he was okay, which the son confirmed he was not involved in any accident.
The suspects called the victim a few minutes later and the victim's wife answered. She was also aware this was an attempted scam and asked the son if he knew her name, which he did not. The victims then hung up and called the sheriff's office to report the scam. They did not lose any money and did not reveal any personal, confidential, or financial information to the suspects.
Be aware there are numerous ways to fall victim to frauds and scams. Red Flags, i.e. warning signs that you are being scammed are unusual circumstances, requesting payment via gift cards, sending cash, or the demands for secrecy or urgency in sending a payment.
If you are concerned, speak with a family member, trusted financial advisor, close friend, or call the Gage County Sheriff's Office and ask to speak with an investigator or a deputy about the situation.
