OFFENSE: One Vehicle Injury Accident

On April 8, 2018, at 1745 hours, members of the Gage County Sheriff’s Office along with Blue Springs Fire, Wymore Fire & Rescue, Beatrice Fire & Rescue and Star Care responded to a one vehicle injury accident at the insertion of 1stand A Street in Blue Springs. Initial investigation made at the scene indicated that the vehicle which was a 1999 Mercedes Benz Ml320 was traveling westbound on 1stStreet approaching the intersection of 1stand A Street. It appears that the vehicle did not stop at the stop sign located at the intersection and may have been traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle hit a dip in the roadway causing the vehicle to lose control and strike sidewalk steps in front of a residence on the south side of 1stStreet. The vehicle then collided with a tree in front of the residence.
The driver of the vehicle was 38 year old; Amy Swafford, of Wymore Nebraska. It is unknown if Swafford was wearing her seatbelt during the accident but the driver’s side airbags did deploy. Swafford sustained injuries to her chest, wrist and lower leg and was life flighted by helicopter to Bryan West General Hospital in Lincoln for further medical care. Based on statements given to EMS personnel, alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the cause of the accident. There is also the possibility of there being a passenger in the vehicle that briefly talked with medical personal but left the scene before speaking with law enforcement. The accident is still under investigation by the Gage County Sheriff’s Office.
