Location:                                        Gage County

Offense:                                          Get Out of Jail Scam

Case:                                                2025-5854

Details:

A citizen called the sheriff’s office during business hours the morning of December 22, 2025 and reported he had received a phone call at 12:20 am from an unknown number claiming to be with the Gage County Detention Center and offering to sell an ankle monitor to get his brother released from the jail because a judge had come in and signed a release order. The subject’s brother had, indeed, been arrested earlier, but a judge had not been in, nor was there a release order placing the custodial brother on an ankle monitor.

The citizen knew almost right away this was a scam and he alerted other family members about it so they would not fall victim the miscreants posing as government officials. He did not send any money for the chimeric ankle monitor, but he wanted to alert the sheriff’s office and the public about the attempted fraud.

If you receive any type of contact (phone, email, letter, etc) regarding bonding out of jail or any other law enforcement matter, call Southeast Communications at 402-223-5221 ext. 1 to verify if the contact is legitimate or not. (The brother in this case was later released from jail after his bond was paid by family members, and he will be home for Christmas.).
