LOCATION: Gage County Detention Center

OFFENSE: Forgery, Attempted Theft by Deception, Obstructing Government Operations

CASE #: 2023-3002

On June 21, 2023, at approximately 2:52 pm, 38-year-old David Barrett, an inmate in Gage County, who had been held in the Washington County, Kansas jail, was brought to the detention center in Beatrice for a court hearing to be held on June 22nd.

While he was being processed and booked into the Gage County Detention Center, Barrett was handed a check for $10.15 that had been issued by the jail in Kansas for the balance of the funds on his inmate account down there. Barrett verbally disputed the amount to the corrections officer, then altered the amount on the check to reflect $100.15 after endorsing it and handed it back to the corrections officer to be added to his account.

The check was then sent on to be processed by the clerical staff who noticed the amount had been altered and notified the sheriff who assigned an investigator to the case.

David Barrett was interviewed while still in the jail and subsequently arrested by the investigator for 2nd Degree Forgery, Attempted Theft by Deception, and Obstruction of Government Operations.
