OFFENSE: Fake Warrant Scam
CASE#: DETAILS: 2025-5643 I 2025-5560
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office has been notified by two individuals that unknown suspects have called them, claiming to be law enforcement officers and telling them they have a warrant for their arrest. In both cases, one on December 3rd and one on December 81\ the suspect/fake cop told the victim to put the address of an actual law enforcement facility into their phone app and tell them how long it would take to get to the building. The suspect/s also told the victims to stay on the phone with them for the entire trip to the law enforcement facility. One victim was being sent to Lincoln from Adams, Nebraska and the other victim was supposed to go to Beatrice from Barneston, Nebraska.
Fortunately, both victims realized it was a scam prior to losing any money. The probable modus operandi (M. 0.) for the suspect would have been to tell the victim that some issue prevents them from handling the warrant at the law enforcement building, then having the victim send the money, gift card, or money order via another method, such as over the phone or online.
If you receive this type of call or any other type of communication that requires secrecy, do not proceed any further until you have spoken to, or communicated with, a person of trust who you know personally or can confirm is legitimate, such as your banker, religious cleric/pastor, or a family member. At any time, you could call the Gage County Sheriff’s Office via Southeast Communications (24-hour dispatch center) at 402-223-4080 x O and request to speak with a deputy or officer from the Beatrice Police Department.
