OFFENSE: Discovery of Human Remains
CASE #: 2024-4803
DETAILS:
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Mennonite Church west of Beatrice after some members of the church discovered what appeared to be the top of a skull on the ground.
Deputies and investigators responded to the scene and were shown what appeared to be the top of a human skull. After tedious excavation around the object, the item was eventually able to be removed from the ground. No other items were found with or around the skull.
An archeologist from the Nebraska State Historical Society who has worked with the Gage County Sheriff’s Office on previous cases was contacted and tentatively identified the item as part of a human skull. This item is not associated with any open or active cases and appears to have been moved up through the ground by nearby tree roots.
The Gage County Attorney’s Office was contacted and advised of the situation and the remains will be turned over to the Nebraska State Historical Society for further identification, checking for Native American ties, and final burial.
