LOCATION: DeWitt, Nebraska
OFFENSE: Bail / Bond Scam
CASE #: 2024-6472
DETAILS:
A resident of rural DeWitt, Nebraska was contacted by telephone by a person claiming to be her nephew. When she asked which one, he told her to “guess” and when she gave the name of one of her nephews, he said correct. When she told him he did not sound like her nephew, he told her he had a sinus infection. She became suspicious, told him he was going to call her mother, then hung up the phone. She did not lose any money.
This is a typical scam preying on the good heartedness of people. The suspects will generally tell you they need bond money (whatever they think you can or will post) and to send it to someone or obtain “gift cards” and give the redemption information to them so they can use it for bond. It is also likely they will ask for secrecy, because if the victim contacts anyone else, they will become aware it is a scam.
The sheriff’s office reminds residents to use caution, never give in to demands for secrecy or urgency, and to contact a family member, banker, or trusted friend for advice or you can contact law enforcement by calling Southeast Communications at 402-223-4080 and ask to speak with a deputy or an officer, if you are in Beatrice.
