OFFENSE: Animal Rescue

CASE #: 2023-0668

On 02-09-23 at 5:46 pm. Deputy Smith of the Gage County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the area of 11092 SW 29th Road, a couple miles northwest of Pickrell, Nebraska, for a dog that had fallen through the ice of a pond and was now trapped.

When Deputy Smith arrived, he observed that the dog, a German Shepherd, was mostly submerged in water and was clinging to the edge of the ice approximately 15 yards from the shore line.

With temperatures near freezing and donning a set of borrowed chest waders, a hammer and his bare hands, Deputy Smith waded into the pond and smashed his way through the ice to the dog and rescued it.

After the recovery of the pet Deputy Smith was evaluated and treated for cold related issues by Deputy Diehl of the Gage County Sheriff’s Office. She is also a Combat Medic in the Nebraska Army National Guard.

Deputy Smith was evaluated by Pickrell EMS on site and returned to duty.

The dog was returned to its owner.
