A resident of Beatrice called the sheriff’s office to report he had received a text message, purportedly from the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, stating his license would be suspended for unpaid infractions. There was a link in the text message for the victim to click on, but he did not do that.
He did not respond to the text message and did not lose any money. He called the sheriff’s office to inform us of the scam.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office reminds people to be aware of the various types of scams and to be cautious when dealing with people or contacts whether it is over the phone, via email or text message, through the mail, or in person. Red flags for a scam are demands for secrecy or the urgency of a situation demanding immediate action. a prize sounding too good to be true, or other circumstances that are not part of normal business routine, for example requesting payment by gift card or granting access to your personal computer or phone.
If you feel you are being targeted, hang up. speak with a family member or trusted friend, seek the advice of a financial expert such as your banker or accountant, or call law enforcement via Southeast Communications at 402-223-4080 and ask to speak with an investigator, a deputy, or a police officer.
