OFFENSE:                                           Scam

CASE #:                                               2025-2590

DETAILS:

A Gage County resident in the Firth area called the sheriff’s office to report a scam / attempted fraud.   After noticing there were double charges on her Amazon account she states she obtained a phone number for Amazon from the Internet, however it turned out to not be the actual number for Amazon and after speaking with someone from the fake number, their phone conversation was disconnected and he called her back from a phone number with a 585 area code, which is the area code for Rochester, New York area.

The mountebank trying to scam her convinced the victim to download a “Help Desk App” and then had her attempt to push through several purchases so they could be denied.  During this time their phone conversation disconnected several times, and she grew suspicious, so she called her bank, who confirmed for her this was fraudulent activity.  The bank cancelled her cards and issued her new ones, and she has not lost any money.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Office urges residents to use caution when dealing with unknown persons or businesses, whether on the phone, on the Internet, or through the mail.  Do not provide any personal, confidential, or financial information to unknown persons and do not allow them to access your electronic devices.  Break off communication with the suspect and immediately contact your financial institution / bank.

You may report the fraud to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office or Beatrice Police Department by calling Southeast Communications at 402-223-4080  and requesting to speak with a deputy or an officer.
