Two Vehicle Non-Injury Accident

DATE & TIME:         Monday, February 02, 2015

LOCATION:             State Highway 41 and S. 38th Road

OFFENSE:                Two Vehicle Non-Injury Accident

CASE #:                   2015-0539

On February 02, 2015 at approximately 0535 hours, Gage County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a non-injury accident near the intersection of State Hwy 41 and S. 38th Road.

Darin Hessheimer, 52 of St. Mary, NE was traveling westbound on State Hwy 41 driving a 2006 Chevrolet K2500 Pickup when he met two eastbound semis. As he met the first semi, Hessheimer’s visibility was lost due to blowing snow caused by the first semi. Once the blowing snow cleared, Hessheimer realized his lane was completely blocked by a snow drift. Hessheimer’s vehicle that was equipped with a V-Plow struck the snow drift causing his vehicle to dart into the opposite lane and collided with the second eastbound semi, a 2001 Kenworth tractor trailer hauling a load of swine, driven by Deryk Wortmann, 19 of Lincoln.

After the collision, Hessheimer’s vehicle came to rest upright in the north ditch while Wortmann’s semi entered the south ditch and came to rest on its passenger side.

Wortmann reported no injuries, while Hessheimer reported minor cuts to his face caused by flying glass from the driver’s side windows breaking during impact. Lap and shoulder belts used in both vehicles, no air bag deployed.

Hwy 41 was closed by deputies around 1420 hours for approximately 30 minutes while LTR Towing of Lincoln returned Wortmann’s semi upright.

A special thanks goes out to the Adams Volunteer Fire and Rescue personnel who assisted in rescuing the livestock from Wortmann’s semi-trailer. No swine appeared to have been injured during or while being removed from the wreckage.

Road conditions were significant factor in the accident; alcohol use was not believed to be involved.
