Cable TV Scam / Identity Theft

DATE & TIME: 09-10-2021 @ 11:38 am

LOCATION: Rural Beatrice, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Cable TV Scam / Identity Theft

CASE #: 2021-3729

A resident of rural Beatrice, Nebraska contacted the Gage County Sheriff’s Office, reporting she had received a phone call from someone claiming to be with her satellite television provider. The suspect told her he could save her 50% off her cable bill, but would need her “pass code”, which she did not provide to him. The suspect continued the conversation asking her how much she spent per month, then told her he could provide a savings, but she would have to pay for eight months of “service” in advance. At this point the victim realized it was a scam and did not cooperate with the suspect, who eventually hung up the phone.

She was advised to contact her financial institution(s) to make them aware of the attempted scam and to help protect her assets, as the suspect apparently obtained some personal information on the victim. She did not, however, report any loss and states she did not send the suspects any money.

The Gage County Sheriff’s Offices urges residents to use caution when dealing with unknown persons whether on the phone, via e-mail, in person, or by mail.  You should always be suspect if an offer is made where you have to provide funds up front and/or payment is demanded through non-traditional business methods, such as the suspect wanting you to purchase gift cards to make payment.

If you suspect someone is attempting to scam you, do not give in to demands for secrecy or urgency, rather contact a family member, trusted friend, or a financial advisor, such as you banker or accountant.  You can report these incidents to the police department or Gage County Sheriff’s Office by contacting our dispatchers at Southeast Communications (402) 223-4080.
