Attempted Theft by Deception

DATE & TIME: 02-22-2023 / 12:11 pm

LOCATION: Firth, Nebraska

OFFENSE: Attempted Theft by Deception

CASE #: 2023-0868

A resident of rural Firth, Nebraska reported to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office that a male with a thick Middle Eastern accent had called her, stating he was with the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) and a lawsuit against her had determined she owed $2,940.00 for a violation sometime between 2015-2020.  The suspect threatened to garnish her wages and lock her out of her checking account.

She was transferred to another suspect who stated she was going to be arrested for a purported income tax violation.  The victim believed this to be a scam and told the suspect to contact her attorney and accountant, hung up the phone, and then called the Gage County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim did not provide any banking information or send any money to the suspects and she did not lose any money.

The sheriff’s office wants people to be aware there are numerous types of scams and fraudulent activities.  Do no succumb to any pressure and do not provide any financial, personal, or confidential information to unknown persons.

If you find yourself confronted by this type of situation, break off contact with the suspects and speak to a family member, a close friend, or a trusted financial adviser such as a banker or accountant.  You may also call the local police department or contact the Gage County Sheriff’s Office and ask to speak with a deputy.
